"Hand-carving" means that a carpenter marks (inks) wood with ink and processes it with a saw, plane, or chisel.
Modern homes are often built by "precuts" that are pre-processed by factory machines.
I think that is the biggest reason for reducing costs by not spending time on processing. Also, in homes that use cheap wood and are not wood-based, there may not be much need or benefit to be hand-carved.
On the contrary, the reason for "hand-carving" is that the carpenter touches the wood, stares at the wood and processes it, so that the habit of each tree can be seen. By looking at the habit of the tree, you can determine where it is appropriate to use each tree, saying, "Let's use this tree here." By using the right tree in the right place, it is possible to complete the life of the tree. Because it is a half-timbered house, the location of each tree is very important. So to speak, "use it where the tree is happy".
Doing so will make your home stronger and last longer.
Also, being a carpenter can do the necessary processing by looking at the habit of wood. I love any kind of wood, and I think it's the carpenter's job to finish it like that wood.
Careful processing takes much longer than a pre-cut house. Therefore, it costs more than a built-for-sale house. However, because I want to cherish each and every tree, I treat the materials carefully and try not to place more orders than necessary (no residual materials and reduce waste). And because it is processed by hand, it is possible to make fine adjustments that cannot be done by machines.
② Wooden frame
"Wooden house" is a traditional Japanese construction method that is built by building wood to wood. You don't use a lot of hardware because you can strengthen it by connecting the trees together. When the trees sway due to an earthquake, the trees are connected to each other, so the trees dig into each other to absorb the sway, and then try to return to their original location. I think that it is proof that buildings built with half-timbered structures such as shrines and temples have remained for a long time.
At the hand-carved stage, we will process the unevenness for woodworking.
③ Earth wall
The earthen wall is a genuine natural material wall that is a mixture of soil, water, straw, and lime. Since it does not use glue or heat insulating material, it has nothing to do with sick house syndrome.
In addition, it is a construction method that is very suitable for the Japanese climate. It keeps the humidity constant to some extent, so even during the rainy season, the inside of the house does not get damp. And in a house with a clay wall, the air inside the house is very comfortable.
The base of the wall is Mai Takegi, who knits bamboo with straw rope. One of the pleasures is the momentary dance of bamboo trees that can be seen during construction.
The sunlight entering between the bamboos is beautiful.
It seems that the number of workshops for knitting wood dance is increasing, but wood dance is an important foundation for walls.
Ichiki carpenter does not hold a wood dance workshop because he wants to finish the groundwork with the technique of a reliable plasterer.
